Stormwater Management
The purpose of the Stormwater program is to ensure that stormwater systems and their associated catch basins, dry wells, water quality treatment bioinfiltration swales (208 swales), trunk and lateral storm drain lines consistently meet the needs of the community and are properly operated and maintained. In addition, recent stormwater planning and new stormwater programs are being implemented in response to our Eastern Washington Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit. The permit was issued from the Department of Ecology in 2007. To view the permit please click on the link Eastern Washington Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit.
City Stormwater Drainage Systems
The City's stormwater drainage system includes...
|
1. |
Over 300 miles of separate storm sewers that discharge stormwater to infiltration facilities to the Spokane River and Latah Creek at over 100 locations, including many bridges.
|
|
2. |
Over 400 miles of combined storm/sanitary systems that carries some stormwater to the City's treatment plant when it rains. During moderate to heavy rainfall and snowmelt events, a combination of stormwater and untreated sewage can overflow to the Spokane River to prevent overloading the plant.
|
|
3. |
Thousands of swale bioinfiltration treatment facilities discharge stormwater into the ground following water quality treatment to trap sediments, oil, grease, and other pollutants. |
Stormwater Questions
Questions about stormwater issues and stormwater rates are common. To help understand this topic, the City developed a document in the year 2000 to answer a variety of frequently asked stormwater questions. Even though the rates have changed, many of the questions and answers are still applicable. To review this document click here (PDF, 124K).
